The Bee Vintage Sew Along began on July 10, 2023, and was designed to last 21 weeks—wrapping up by August 25, 2023 if you followed the schedule. I, however, found myself a little behind and didn’t finish my quilt top until September 17, 2023. That was right in the middle of preparing for our big move from Clarksville to Soddy Daisy, which made trying to quilt in the midst of packing boxes quite the challenge! At that time, I still needed to purchase the backing fabric, and of course, get through the move before I could even think about quilting it on Miss Moxie.
Our move “officially” happened in October 2023. And now, here I am, finally sharing the finished quilt in 2025. Life definitely had a way of slowing me down on this one—but if I’m being honest, the real reason for the delay was my fear of quilting it.
This is another one of Lori Holt’s beautiful appliqué quilts, and in my mind, appliqué quilts deserve custom quilting. The truth is, I simply can’t afford to send mine out, and I don’t have the skills (or the patience!) to do elaborate custom work myself. I haven’t even mastered rulers! So, I stick with what I know best—edge-to-edge quilting—and remind myself that as long as I’m happy with my piecing, the quilting design is just the extra layer of love on top.
The finished quilt measures 71” x 84” and is made with fabrics from Lori Holt’s Bee Vintage and Bee Plaids collections. The sew along guide is free on Lori’s website, and with her Sew Simple Shapes, step-by-step instructions, and YouTube tutorials, anyone can make this charming quilt.
My favorite blocks from this quilt are Overall Bill, Sunbonnet Sue, and Kitty—each one stitched with all the sweetness and nostalgia that Lori’s designs always bring.
